John Lumpkin’s Jazz Discovery Series Featuring Charles Turner
The Charles Turner Quartet has performed at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola – Jazz at Lincoln Center for the Generations in Jazz Festival for 2 consecutive years. He also released his Debut Album “Dreamers” produced by Grammy Award-winning drummer Ulysses Owens at Jazz at Lincoln Center in March of 2014. Appearing next at Jazz at Lincoln Center, he will be a part of the 2015-16 Season at its debut concert in the Appel Room in May 2016. Turner graduated from the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts on a full scholarship. During his time there Charles had the wonderful opportunity to study and perform with Grammy Award–winning drummer and educator Terri Lyne Carrington, Dave Samuels, Dee Dee Bridgewater and Joanne Brackeen.
The series is curated by The University of North Florida graduate and jazz arranger, producer and artist John Lumpkin. “Jacksonville loves jazz. The Jazz Discovery Series introduces our community to amazingly talented musicians that are leading the next generation of jazz,” said Lumpkin. His band will continue to serve as the trio for the Series. In addition to being on staff at UNF and Douglas Anderson School of the Arts; Lumpkin holds a Master’s Degree from Florida State University and has shared the stage with notable musicians, such as: Delfeayo Marsalis, Wycliff Gordon, Marcus Roberts, Arturo Sandoval, Curtis Fuller, Marcus Printup, Houston Pearson, Rufus Reid, Ben Tucker, James Moody, Nathan Davis and David Baker.
This season, the Jazz Discovery Series will take residency in the theatre’s prestigious lobby space; which is where the Ritz held its popular Jazz Jamm series in early to mid-2000’s.
